Course Overview:
The BTEC National Level 3 Extended Certificate in Applied Law provides learners with legal knowledge whilst giving them the opportunities to develop the skills and behaviours that employers in the industry are looking for, enabling progression directly into employment or via higher education.
Learners develop many of the transferable and higher-order skills that are highly regarded by higher education and employers. For example, when studying the unit on dispute solving in civil law, students will develop legal skills in research, and will be able to use these research skills to investigate the way in which the law is developed and applied through precedent.
Over the course of 2 years, learners study 4 units, each designed to introduce the learner to a specific area of law and prepare them for the life of work or higher education.

Year 1:
Unit 1 – Dispute solving in civil law (Assessed externally through a set task taken in January and May Year 1)
Unit 2 – investigating aspects of criminal law (Assessed internally through coursework)
Year 2:
Unit 3 – Applying the law (Assessed externally through a set task taken in January and May Year 2)
Unit 5 – Consumer Law (Assessed internally through coursework)
Qualification Gained
Year 1 – BTEC Level 3 National Certificate in Applied Law
Year 2 – BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Applied Law
Career Opportunities
This course provides learners with a good course of study for preparation to enter a law practice at the age of 18, but is designed as an introduction to law, providing the knowledge, understanding and skills that will prepare learners for further study or training, either at University or through a Higher Apprenticeship.
Learners studying Applied Law could go on to study honours or foundation degrees in Law, Criminology, Criminal Studies, Policing and Criminal Justice, Business or Business and Law.
