Widening Participation (WP) Programme

“Raising Aspirations Programme (RAP)”

Following on from the success of 'RAP' developed by Shoreham Academy in 2014, Ifield Community College are been pleased to be part of this programme which is a careers education programme for Key Stage 3 students. It offers a robust and engaging opportunity for students to develop positive attitudes towards their futures and the knowledge to realise their ambitions.

The raising aspirations project is targeted at our whole Year 7 cohorts and aims to:

  • Introduce the language of higher education (HE)
  • Explore options and consider the future
  • Offer visits to local HE institutes (HEI), including the Universities of Brighton, Chichester and Sussex
  • Develop personal goals

Whilst many schools attend open days and taster activities at local universities, this programme offers all students in Year 7, regardless of Widening Participation criteria, the opportunity to visit a range of HE providers as well as providing classroom activities and resources to support these visits. These resources include a suite of lessons created to support this programme include:

  • planning for the future & understanding what students need to get there
  • exploring careers
  • the opportunity to explore & investigate HEIs, and
  • develop life skills such as budgeting

The course content contributes to Ofsted recommendations for effective careers education, information, advice and guidance as well as developing literacy and numeracy skills.

This project forms a case study to share best practice and also provide an accessible framework for other schools, networks and HEIs to adopt.

It has been funded by the Sussex Learning Network as part of a scheme (National Networks for Collaborative Outreach) that aims to encourage more young people into Higher Education.
