Grade 4 in GCSE Mathematics and
Grade 4 in GCSE English Language or GCSE English Literature
Mathematical Studies or Core Mathematics is a relatively new Level 3 course designed by the Government for a good proportion of sixth form students who have achieved a Grade 4 or higher at GCSE and who are not studying A Level Mathematics. It is a further course option which would be taken in addition to A Levels in the first year. The qualification has been designed to prepare students for the mathematical demands of work, life and other qualifications.
It complements a range of numerate A Level courses such as, Accounting, Applied Sciences, Biology, Geography, Product Design and Psychology. Core Mathematics is diverse, engaging and essential in equipping students with the right skills to reach their future destination. This course is best suited for students who enjoy mathematics but are put off by the rigour and intensity of AS or A Level Mathematics.
Duration: 1 year
Exam Board: AQA
Paper 1 – Compulsory Content
Paper 2 – 1 choice of either : Statistical Techniques, Critical Path & Risk Analysis, Graphical Techniques
Level 3 Certificate in Mathematical Studies
The course is quite applied in nature and seeks to teach students new concepts and techniques for solving a variety of both theoretical and ‘real world’ problems. The course is useful for those who wish to study a number of degree courses with mathematical, statistical or numerate elements including Politics or Sociology degrees
Geography, Psychology, and other statistical based subjects.
